Barking Riverside

Barking Riverside is a brown-field development situated between the A13 and the River Thames on the former Barking Power Station land, it is the largest housing site within the Thames Gateway, being 185 hectares and on completion delivering 10,800 new homes and associated facilities. In 2010 ACE were appointed to carry out the detailed design of the initial phase of the residential development, at Barking Riverside, consisting 50 two and three storey houses and three to five storey flat block containing 47 apartments.

The scope of work entailed:

  • Bulk earthworks; cut and fill assessment using 3D surface models from topographical survey and proposed design formations.
  • Highway layout; horizontal alignment of access roads, footways, on-street parking and integrated landscaping.
  • Arrangement of public open space containing swales, rain garden, play area and access paths.
  • Foul and surface water drainage design, including calculations and hydraulic modelling and drainage layout.
  • Determine finished floor level for each unit, external levels to all plots, vertical design of highways and levels to public open space areas.
  • Construction details for all highways and drainage elements of work.
  • External works layout – external finishes and requirements to each plot.
  • External lighting design and specification to highway and open space areas.
  • Co-ordination of statutory services
  • Setting out drawings, providing co-ordinates for construction purposes.
  • Preparation of legal drawings to assist with sales and other agreements.

On completion of the work carried out on the initial phase of the development, Ardent have subsequently been appointed to undertake the same scope of work for the next four phases to date.
